IHP 640 Milestone Two
After a recent increase in the number of patient falls, hospital administration has
requested an analysis of data on patient falls, specifically falls in patients that had been in
restraints. While the hospital had a reported 356 falls in the last quarter, 198 of the falls reported
were for patients that were in restraints. In order to improve patient safety, hospital
administration wants to review the medical records of patients that fell while in restraint and
improve on processes and workflows to reduce the instance of falls in this patient population.
In this project, the sample population is limited to only those patients with a reported fall
that were in restraints, this is a total of 198 patients. Because of the small size of the population,
and the limited information provided on patient demographics, our team will use a simple
random sampling method to obtain a sample population for analysis. The simple random
sampling method allows the team to randomly select patients from the population with little or
no bias, every patient has equal probability of being selected. Because of this reduced bias in
sampling, the overall data reported will reflect little to no bias and therefore will provide the
administration with a more accurate report ("QMSS" 2017).
While there are some disadvantages to using the simple random sampling method, many
of these disadvantages do not apply in this instance. Unlike with larger studies, our population is
limited and we have a full list of the entire population that requires sampling. Because the
patient-identifying data has been limited by the hospital administration, there is no need to worry
about obtaining consents to complete the analysis, all the data that is needed has been provided
("QMSS" 2017). Lastly the data is fully accessible, there is no worry about requiring further
