The Dancer (continued)

#1: Duato discusses the societal influences against him becoming a dancer

because he was a man. Do you think these societal influences exist today? Why?

I do believe that some of these societal influences still exist today because

there is still the connotation that at an early age of a child, the boys should be doing

things that boys do such as sports, and the girls should be doing girl things such as

dancing. As Nacho stated, “a man that wanted to become a dancer is considered to

be mad.” Duato is a perfect example of this because when he was only a child his

mother did not want to place him in ballet class, but she did let his sister join the

class. Fortunately for him, the ballet teacher told his mother not to waste her money

by letting her daughter take the classes, but to instead let Nacho join as he was

always peaking through the window watching the ballet dancers practice.
