Select a metallic component (of implants, cars, airplanes, ships, home utilities, testing machines, manufacturing equipment, etc.) that, you think, is manufactured by casting, and necessitates sectioning into at least 3 sub-parts for appropriate solidification sequence purposes. Chosen part: Dumbbell 1. Provide a sketch or a drawing of the component including approximate dimensions. What type of metal was used? Why? Figure 1. Sketch of component The metal used for this dumbbell is cast iron. Cast iron is selected due to its high compressive strength and machinability. It also has a lower melting point, better flowability and lower shrinkage when compared to steel, which makes it more suitable for casting processes. Another advantage of cast iron is its good corrosion resistance and relatively low cost. 2. State why you think the part is made by casting, and why it needs to be sectioned into the number of sub-parts you choose for appropriate solidification. The iron dumbbell is made by casting because of its the grainy texture that can be seen on nonmachined surfaces. This is a sign that the product is made through sand casting where the grain of sand leaves the texture on the surface. Other evidence that the part is made by casting is that iron dumbbells are cheap to purchase and therefore cheap to manufacture. Sand casting is one of the cheapest manufacturing processes. The part has large dimensional tolerance requirements which also points to it being sand cast. This part needs to be sectioned into three sub-parts. This is because the middle of the part is much smaller in volume when compared to the sides so it will have a shorter solidification time. Therefore, the part needs to be divided on either end of the middle section. 3. Select a casting process to best make the part. What mold material would you use
