 UBST 253: Introduction to Cities: Urban Film Review Due: November 17th, 11:00 AM This project is designed to enable you to connect some of the themes that have been discussed in class to depictions of life in cities. The subjects we have covered in class are not abstract; they shape peoples' everyday experiences and they are depicted in the arts. You need to find and view a non-documentary film with a strong urban-based theme and interpret it in light of the class readings and class lectures. While you will want to provide a brief summary of the storyline or opinion about the film, your primary assignment is to show how the readings have helped you understand the experiences of the film’s characters and story. This may include or relate to issues like settlement patterns, urbanization, urbanism, urban design, urban form, racial or ethnic conflict, community formation, economic restructuring, consumerism, the gendering of space, segregation, or suburbanization, to name a few. You should take notes as you view the film; be especially careful to note things in the landscape, dialogue, and action. After, or during, the film you should consult your lecture notes and, in particular, the course readings. Your review must include explicit reference to at least four (or more, preferably) class readings. You must use relevant quotes or ideas from these readings in your analysis of your chosen film. For some films, you will want to read ahead in the assigned readings to find the most relevant ones. Typically, students include references to more than the number of required readings. Keep in mind, you can use any readings listed on the syllabus, including the optional readings. Your review should be 750 to 1000 words, typed, double-spaced. No more than 1100 words, maximum, please. This project counts for 25 % of your course grade. Writing competency (spelling, grammar, organization, word choice, clarity, etc.) counts for 20% of the project grade. Typically, students choose to check out or rent a film on their own, at their convenience. Most of the films listed below can be checked out from the Taylor Family Digital Library (TFDL) or streamed for a nominal fee. Many films can be streamed on
