SMI: The Drift Toward War The spark of civil war, national rivalries, and the creation of two opposing sides, the central powers and the allies, paved its way for the first war with many nations creating war plans. SS: Nationalist Aspirations After the French revolution and Napoleonic conquests, nationalist movements had large affects all throughout Europe, unifying Italy, allowing Belgians to gain independence from the Netherlands, unifying Germany, and beginning the shrinking of the Ottoman empire. SS: National Rivalries Nationalism also played a role in economic affairs, creating tensions between the British and Germans in the naval race, and creating more tensions between the British and Germans an more when multiple countries would attempt to imperialize in the same place. SS: Understandings and Alliances The Central Powers consisted of Italy, Germany, and Austria-Hungary but soon another group, the Allies which consisted of Britain, France, and Russia appeared as everyone created war plans and strategies. SMI: Global War The wars started with the Russians and Germans as an all out bloodfest broke out with other nations joining in but for different reasons; many used censorship on the people. SS: The Guns of August The Russian Tsar declared mobilization against Germany because partial mobilization against Austrians would upset military plans, so it led to war between Germany and Russia while France started to mobilize. SS: Mutual Butchery As nations became more power hungry and started to create more lethal weapons, they not only had massive soldier casualties, but civilian casualties as well.
