Newman pointed out that, “nurse client relationships often begin during periods of disruption, uncertainty, and unpredictability in patient’s lives” (Smith & Parker, 2015, p. 288). Patients often meet their nurses during illness, trauma and life losses. When their world can potentially be making a drastic change, the nurse is there to help them through their medical situation. The nurse assists in guiding the patients through the health-related planning, interventions, evaluations and post hospitalization planning. The nurse is there when a patient is at their worst and assists them in regaining function to their optimal health status. In mental health, I have had many instances to use Newman’s theory. This week, we had a MTF (male to female) transgender lady come in. She is in the process of transitioning from male to female. She has had breast augmentation completed. She was very leery of others accepting her. She came in for suicidal ideation and had pulled the trigger on a gun but luckily the safety was on. She reported feeling worthless, hopeless and having nothing to live for. She drives a truck for a living and is from out of state. She has no family supports. She reported feelings of not being accepted and loneliness. One issue we had was that she continues to grow facial hair even with the hormone injections. Our razors leave a lot to be desired due to their safety requirements. I spoke with the social services director and we were able to obtain NAIR for her to apply to remove the facial hair. She was very thankful and this really helped her self-image during her stay. We have provided interpersonal groups, individual therapy, nursing group (15 minutes eve
