American Involvement in The Vietnam War, and the American Society During the Decade of The 1960's. In the United States of America, the 1960s were a decade of a lot of social changes. This was mostly in respect of the infamous Vietnam War, which served as a catalyst for the cultural civil movements. This is still an issue that creates differences and invokes emotions today. Under the new president Nixon, the Americans had always presented their campaign against communism as a moral crusade. The USA failed to stop South Vietnam going communist. This involvement of the USA was due to a larger cold war against the Soviet Union. This is because, after a formulation of a policy of containment and the domino theory as a response to the Soviet Union, USA got to check the communism spread in Vietnam. In the war span, many American people died, and millions got misplaced. The war had divided the American public. Majority of the Americans did not want the war as it had cost a lot financially. This war pushed the American economy to the limits which were a key contributor to its defeat. The Americas realized that the concept of Vietnamese communism did not matter as much as the media hyped. Much did not happen as the front line soldiers never knew of the demonstrations ongoing at home against the war. The soldiers had a duty to kill, whether they wanted or not. They were also casualties and suffered killings in hundreds each day. Universities and students at home had feelings of sympathy for the soldiers. They did not feel empathy, hence; they never understood what it was like fighting, in a war they did not want and for little to gain.
