The Two-Face Tricksters
Lost characters are often victimized by those with corrupt hearts, corrupt minds, and corrupt
convictions. These lost characters are then labeled as tricksters because they are seen as the
manipulators, fulfilling the deeds of those that have perceived themselves as a companion. The
tricksters are then themselves seen as the unpredictable, deceitful, and ill-willed mastermind
behind the actions that are dictated by the sycophant in their life. In reality, the tricksters are
tainted by those that had taken them in, but they don’t desire to follow the same dark path, they
only desire to find freedom and peace within their lives. This is true for both tricksters in the
films Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and the film Spirited Away, both Jen Yu and Haku
developed deceptive traits and hard exteriors that help them through their journeys of selfdiscovery. Jen Yu and Haku deceit others with facades, concealing their vulnerability to everyone
but a select few, those being the ones that change and grow with them
