Parliament's actions during this period, particularly those of the House of Commons, played a significant role in the breakdown of negotiations. The Long Parliament, which was called in 1640 and sat for over a decade, was characterized by growing tensions between Parliament and the King. Parliament, emboldened by its newfound power, sought to assert its authority and limit the royal prerogative. Parliament passed several measures that challenged Charles I's authority, such as the Triennial Act of 1641, which ensured that Parliament would be summoned at least once every three years, and the Militia Ordinance of 1642, which transferred control of the militia from the King to Parliament. These actions were seen by the King as encroachments upon his powers and sparked further distrust and animosity between the two sides.
