Task
To identify eight materials as
Heterogeneous (different) or Homogeneous (same)
Pure Substance (one), Solution or a Mechanical Mixture
Instructions
1. Eight vials or test tubes containing unidentified mixtures, solutions or pure substances have been
placed on the lab bench.
2. Copy the table below on your own piece of paper, to record your observations about the eight
substances. You will want to look for properties such as color, viscosity, density, ability to mix, clarity,
luster, etc.
3. Give your table a title
4. Examine the contents of each test tube carefully. DO NO TAKE THE STOPPER OFF THE
TOP OF THE TEST TUBE. The number on the tape is the Vial Number. The test tubes
contain unidentified samples.
As a clue, (1) three test tubes contain mechanical mixture, (2) three have pure substances, and (2) two
have solutions.
5. Observe the substances and classify each as Heterogeneous or Homogeneous.
Provide your reasons for your classification choice.
6. Try to identify the substances using the list below. RECALL: The Heterogeneous samples are
Mechanical Mixtures
