Unknown mixture number: 4
Purpose
The purpose of the experiment was to isolate two compounds within the unknown mixture
number four to determine their identity. This was done by liquid-liquid extraction,
recrystallization and were then identified by comparing the observed physical properties, like
melting point, to the known values.
Materials and Methods
Materials:
 Balances
 Beaker- 50 mL and 2-100 mL
 Boiling beads
 Buchner funnel (plastic)
 Erlenmeyer flask (125 mL) & rubber stopper
 Filtering flask (125 mL)
 Filter paper- 4.25 cm (P4) and 11 cm (P8)
 Funnel
 Graduated cylinder- 10 mL
 Hot plate with temperature probe or thermocouple
 
Stir rod
 Aluminum heating block
 Litmus paper
 Ice bat
