DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
1. What do you think of this description of Captain Holly Graf’s leader style? Do you think that Captain Graf could even be called a leader? Discuss.
I think that it’s important for every leader to try different avenues of leadership style, so they can find what works best for them and apply a more balanced approach if necessary.
2. What kinds of power do you think Graf used as a ship commander? Explain your choices.
She used a very Autocratic style; She’s the type that needs to be in full control of everything in her life, no questions asked, which unfortunately extends to those she’s leading.
3. Not surprisingly, this whole scenario rocked the Navy to its core, because it reflected on the way the Navy chooses, promotes, and then monitors its hand- picked leaders. What changes, if any, do you think need to take place in its leadership training and development?
Moderation: While having a primary style of leading could be considered a strength it’s just as important to tone it down a bit, and train some complementary styles of leading people, as no two people respond the same to a certain way of doing things.
4. Some critics of Graf’s treatment have said that institutional sexism played a role in her removal. Do you think that could be possible? Discuss. Would that “excuse” the way she led? Explain.
Of course it’s possible, it happens every day and it’s in people’s nature, however in this case I don’t think that, that was the problem. I really think it had more to do with her attitude and leadership style than anything gender related. There’s no excuse for treating another human being poorly just because of some insecurities.

Accolades: will deflect praise onto everyone around them and will take full responsibility if something goes wrong.
Always learning: What makes a better leader and person, even if it’s from those they’re leading.
Emotionally intelligent: Charismatic and empathetic to those they’re leading
