Mayflower Compact- 1620
H- This was written during the voyage of the pilgrims. The Puritans wanted more
reform of the Anglican Church. Some puritans were persecuted for their beliefs.
The pilgrims wanted to completely separate from the Church of England. They lined up
investors for Plymouth colony. The puritans and other “strangers” set sail for virginia,
but rough seas led them off course. This divided the Puritans and the
“Strangers”,leading to the mayflower compact.
I- The intended audience is King James, the Pilgrims, and the strangers, and the
English Government.
P- The purpose of this document was to establish a civil body, and structured
government for the sake of their survival. They wanted to make fair and equal laws.
“Do by these Presents, solemnly and mutually, in the Presence of God and one another,
covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil Body Politick, for our better
Ordering and Preservation, and Furtherance of the Ends aforesaid: And by Virtue hereof
do enact,constitute, and frame, such just and equal Laws, Ordinances, Acts,
Constitutions, and Officers, from time to time, as shall be thought most meet and
convenient for the general Good of the Colony”
P- This document is in the perspective of the Puritans, the strangers, and King James.
It was a social contract that they all agreed on, and signed.
John Winthrop’s “City upon a Hill”
H- The Puritans are in America. They are seeking refuge after suffering political
repression, economic recession and religious persecution in England. They
were trying to break away from England and build an e. Some Puritans still wanted to

maintain their relationship with England. Some Puritans started the Massachusetts
Bay Company, and their settlement was supported by the Crown. Mostly puritans
settled there, and John Winthrop was one of the main leaders of the settlement.
I- The intended audience is the Puritans and the Massachusetts Bay Colony. P- The
purpose of this document was to try and get all Puritans to convert to
christianity.He wanted the government to be civil and abide by Christian beliefs.He
intended to create a better society than the ones they escaped in England.He wanted
them to be like a “City upon a hill”.
“The Lord will be our God, and delight to dwell among us, as his oune people, and will
command a blessing upon us in all our wayes. Soe that wee shall see much more of his
wisdome, power, goodness and truthe, than formerly wee have been acquainted with.
Wee shall finde that the God of Israell is among us, when ten of us shall be able to
resist a thousand of our enemies.
