• EVIDENCED-BASED PRACTICE (EBP) SUMMARY 2 EVIDENCED-BASED PRACTICE (EBP) SUMMARY Evidence-based Practice and Research: the challenge for transplant nursing Introduction This article is about the transplant nurse’s role in applying researched evidence based practice in patient care. It is necessary for transplant nurses to provide care to patients under research based theory and practice. The Institute of Medicine reports by 2020, ninety percent of clinical decisions should be based on evidence, but today only twelve to fourteen percent of clinical decisions are based on evidence. Pravikoff conducted a survey and colleagues of 3000 nurses in the United States had a thirty-seven percent response rate. Fifty-eight percent of nurses who responded stated they have never used research to support their practice and forty-six percent have never heard of evidence-based practice. Seventy-seven percent of these nurses did not know how to search for research literature and eighty-two percent have never went to a hospital library (Pravikoff,Tanner &Pierce,2005). The Purpose of this article is to clearly identify the role of transplant nurses; how to practice nursing under approved research based theory, recognize the initiators and obstacles in preventing them to practice nursing under research guided theory, and explain the importance of evidence based practice in transplant nursing
