What Happened?

I am writing this Reflection based on 69 years old male Vernon Watkins’s case

scenario, who underwent Emergency Hemicolectomy 4 days ago and has been

transferred to General Surgical ward. Hemicolectomy is an operation performed

mainly for colon cancer. Other indications include, inflammatory bowel disease, cecal

volvulus, colonic polyp with high malignant potential and complicated appendicitis

involving the appendix base/ cecum (Mitchell & Mandava,2020). Mr Watkins was

refusing to ambulate because of fatigue and a sore leg and was reluctant to use the

incentive spirometer. As I went to see him, he was complaining of difficulty breathing.

After obtaining his vital signs, I went through the current medical orders to check if

anything can be done or given to make his condition better, then I called his Medical

officer explaining the situation by following ISBAR handover tool and obtained new

medical orders. After performing some assessments, applying some interventions

and medication administration Mr. Watkins condition was stable.

Feelings

What were you feeling during the situation?

I was feeling very nervous, anxious, under pressure and lacking on knowledge as I

was not able to respond and act towards the situation appropriately and effectively.

Evaluation

What was good and bad about the experience?

The good experience about performing Vsim Scenario of Mr. Watkins was to be able

to participate and explore real nursing scenario as well as be able to actively interact

with him, provide care, enhance my decision making and critical thinking skills.

For me the only bad experience about participating in Mr. Watkin’s Vsim scenario

was that I could not react or act appropriately, effectively, timely and prioritize the

tasks according to patient’s condition.
