Since children spend most of their day at school, it is only reasonable that local schools
implement high immunization coverage to minimize the risk to spread vaccine preventable
diseases. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or CDC, addresses the suggested
vaccine coverage for children entering kindergarten, “ Healthy People 2020 targets
of maintaining 95% vaccination coverage levels for 2 doses of MMR vaccine, 4 doses of DTaP†
vaccine, and 2 doses of varicella vaccine, low vaccination and high exemption levels can cluster
within communities, increasing the risk for disease (CDC, MMWR). The statistics specified by
CDC provides substantiated statistics of the required vaccines that are mandated from schools;
however, a percentage of parents are exempted from immunizing their child and as a result can
cause an outbreak of disease in schools.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that children receive
more than 20 vaccinations between birth and age 6 to combat many of the most
common childhood diseases.
Scientists have estimated that worldwide vaccinations and immunization programs save 2.5
million lives every year. Specifically, these efforts have reduced deaths dramatically of children
under five years of age between 2000 and 2010, despite an increase in the number of children
born. Children can be particularly susceptible to pneumonia and diarrhea, often resulting in death
if not treated properly. Advancements in technology and health equity have made vaccines for
these ailments (specifically the pneumococcal and rotavirus vaccinations) available to millions of
children worldwide.
